Buying property in New Zealand from Australia

Common questions

Can Australians buy a house in New Zealand?

Yes. Australian citizens do not need Overseas Investment Office consent to buy residential or lifestyle land in New Zealand, to live in or to rent out. Some sensitive land (on an island, beside some water or reserves, rural or farm land) has extra rules.

Can Australians live and work in New Zealand?

Yes. Under the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement, Australian citizens get a resident visa on arrival and can live, work and study in New Zealand indefinitely.

Do Australians get free healthcare in New Zealand?

Australian citizens and permanent residents who have lived in New Zealand for two years, or intend to stay at least two years, are eligible for publicly funded health services. Shorter stays are covered for immediately necessary care under the reciprocal health agreement.

Can I move my super to KiwiSaver?

Yes, once you have moved to New Zealand permanently: the trans-Tasman retirement savings portability scheme moves savings from an Australian complying fund (not a self-managed fund) into a KiwiSaver scheme that accepts transfers. Transferred Australian savings cannot be used for a first home.
