Questions

What is the lowest mortgage rate in New Zealand today?

The lowest advertised 1-year fixed rate is 4.49% from China Construction Bank, as at 21 Oct. Every lender’s rates at every term are on our mortgage rates page, updated daily.

Should I fix or float my mortgage?

Most New Zealand borrowers fix, because fixed rates are usually lower than floating and the repayments are certain for the term. Floating costs more but can be repaid or moved at any time without a break fee. Many split the loan between the two.

Should I use a mortgage broker or go to my bank?

A bank can only offer its own loans; a broker can compare several lenders and negotiate with them, which helps most when your situation is not straightforward. Either way, the advertised rate is a starting point.

What does a mortgage broker cost?

Usually nothing for the borrower: New Zealand mortgage advisers are mostly paid a commission by the lender. They must tell you how they are paid before giving advice.

General information, not financial advice. Rates are lenders’ advertised rates and change often.
