Every place on the New Zealand Heritage List / Rārangi Kōrero, kept by Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga: historic buildings, historic areas, wāhi tapu and national landmarks. Pick a council to see its listed places, with the properties they stand on.
Search for your address and open its page: a property on the New Zealand Heritage List shows the entry, its category and when it was listed, under the address. You can also browse every listed place in your council's district below. Councils keep their own heritage schedules in their district plans too, which can include places that are not on the national list; check the district plan for those.
Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga enters historic places on the list in two categories. Category 1 places are of special or outstanding historical or cultural significance; Category 2 places are of historical or cultural significance. Historic areas group places that together have significance, and wāhi tapu, wāhi tapu areas and wāhi tūpuna are places sacred or important to Māori.
The list itself does not stop an owner altering or demolishing a building. It informs councils, which usually protect listed places through heritage rules in their district plans, so changes to a listed building often need resource consent. Separately, any site of human activity before 1900 is an archaeological site under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014, and modifying one needs an authority from Heritage New Zealand, whether or not it is listed.
