Agents in New Zealand are usually paid a commission on the sale price, often tiered (a higher rate on the first part of the price and a lower one on the rest), sometimes with a base fee, plus GST. Marketing is usually charged separately. Commission is negotiable: ask two or three agents who have sold in Horotiu recently for a written appraisal and their full fee, and compare them.

Ask each agent for the homes they have sold in Horotiu and nearby in the last year, what they sold for against the asking price, and how long they took. Ask how they would sell yours (auction, tender, deadline or a price), what the marketing costs and who pays it, and who you will deal with day to day. Check their licence on the REA public register before you sign an agency agreement.

No. Who appears and in what order comes only from sales records and listings that name the agent, matched to the Real Estate Authority's licence register. Nobody can pay to be listed or to move up.
